Rainstorm leaves over 4,000 stranded at Chengdu airport

A rainstorm in southwest China's Chengdu, capital of Sichuan Province, has left more than 4,000 people stranded at the airport, authorities said.

Heavy rain began to hit the city on Friday, causing a 40-minute closure of the airport. A total of 21 flights landed at alternative airports in Chongqing, Kunming, Xi'an, Guiyang and Mianyang, while another 48 flights were canceled. One flight returned after taking off.

As of 10:30 p.m. Friday, 357 flights were delayed, leaving more than 9,000 passengers stranded. About 4,000 people stayed overnight at hotels near the airport, according to airport officials.

The airport has scheduled more than 895 flights on Saturday to ensure those stuck in the city can leave, according to the airport. Endi
