At least 12 killed, 34 injured in bus accident in Bolivia

Xinhua, May 6, 2016 Adjust font size:

At least 12 people were killed and 34 others injured in Bolivia when a passenger bus fell over a cliff in the eastern country, a police officer announced Thursday.

In a press conference, the chief of police for the department of Santa Cruz, Sabino Guzman, said the tragedy occurred in the town of Mairana, 130 km from the provincial capital of Santa Cruz.

"We went to check the facts and confirmed that 12 people died, including four children," said Guzman.

The injured were taken to a hospital for treatment in the nearby town of Comarapa.

According to passenger statements, the accident took place when the driver of a bus, belonging to the Trans Tupiza company, lost control while trying to avoid a vehicle driving on the wrong side of the road.

The Volvo bus, with two drivers and 45 passengers, left the highway and tumbled down a ravine for around 100 meters.

Guzman added that an investigation is underway to verify the causes of the accident and whether any negligence was involved, such as speeding. Endit
