Armenia mulls recognizing independence of Nagorno-Karabakh

The Armenian government on Thursday approved a bill that will recognize the independence of Nagorno-Karabakh, an enclave with a large ethnic Armenian population in neighboring Azerbaijan, it is reported.
The bill, introduced by two opposition lawmakers, has been sent to Parliament for debate. It is the result of multilateral discussions between the Armenian and Karabakh parties.
Armenia and Azerbaijan have been locked in a bitter dispute over the mountainous region since 1988 when the enclave claimed independence from Azerbaijan to join Armenia.
Fresh clashes broke out on April 2. Although a cease-fire was reached three days later, conflicts have not ceased, with Armenia and Azerbaijan accusing each other of violating the truce. Endi
