A helicopter believed to be carrying VIPs went missing in Malaysia's Sarawak state on North Borneo amid a state election campaign, local media reported Thursday.

Department of Civil Aviation director-general Azharuddin Abdul Rahman said search and rescue operation had been launched, according to state news agency Bernama.

Local media reported that the helicopter was carrying several VIPs.

Sarawak will hold its state legislation election in the coming weekend. Leaders from both the ruling coalition, led by Prime Minister Najib Razak, as well as the opposition have been actively campaigned for the state election, which is widely considered as a significant indicator for the next general election due in 2018.
