River Plate, Corinthians eliminated from Copa Libertadores

Xinhua, May 5, 2016 Adjust font size:

Defending champions River Plate were eliminated from the Copa Libertadores on Wednesday after a 2-1 aggregate loss to Ecuador's Independiente del Valle.

Lucas Alario scored in the second-half to hand River Plate a 1-0 victory on the night in their round of 16 second-leg clash. But the result at the Monumental stadium in Buenos Aires was not enough for the Argentine outfit after their 2-0 loss in Quito last week.

Meanwhile Sao Paulo also progressed to the quarterfinals despite a 3-1 loss at Toluca. The Brazilian club won 5-3 on aggregate after a 4-0 home victory last week.

In Wednesday's second leg in Mexico, Fernando Uribe netted a brace while Enrique Triverio was also on the scoresheet for the hosts.

Former Brazil international Michel Bastos scored for Sao Paulo, who were reduced to 10 men when Ricardo Centurion was dismissed in second-half stoppage time.

Atletico Mineiro advanced to the quarterfinals after a 2-1 victory over Racing Club, a week after their goalless draw in the first leg.

And Uruguay's Nacional earned a shock 2-2 draw with Corinthians in Sao Paulo to eliminate the Brazilian giants on away goals after the teams also drew 0-0 in the first leg. Endit
