UN chief to appoint Erik Solheim of Norway as new UN environment head

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said on Tuesday he will appoint Erik Solheim of Norway as executive director of the UN Environment Program (UNEP).

According to a statement released by his spokesperson, Ban has informed the General Assembly his intention to make the appointment after consultations with regional groups of UN member states.

Solheim is currently the chair of the Development Assistance Committee of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, a post he has held since 2013.

He served as Norway's minister for the Environment and International Development from 2007 to 2012.

He will succeed Achim Steiner, outgoing UNEP chief whose term will end in June, 2016. Steiner has congratulated Solheim on his nomination to become the sixth executive director in UNEP's 44-year history. Endit
