American soldier with coalition forces killed in Iraq

Xinhua, May 3, 2016 Adjust font size:

U.S. defense officials confirmed on Tuesday that an American serviceman was killed during an operation in Iraq.

The Pentagon said in a brief statement that a coalition service member was killed in northern Iraq as a result of enemy fire.

"Further information will be released as appropriate," said the statement.

Meanwhile, U.S. Defense Secretary Ash Carter said on Tuesday in Stuttgart, Germany, that the slain service member was American.

According to the U.S. daily The Wall Street Journal, the American soldier was hit by "direct enemy fire" on Tuesday about 20 miles, or 32 km, north of Mosul, the extremist group the Islamic State's (IS) de facto capital in Iraq.

The serviceman was killed during a train-and-assist mission, said the Journal.

It was the third time an American serviceman was killed since the U.S.-led coalition's operation against the IS began in the summer of 2014. Endi
