Police stop 583 drunk drivers during May Day holiday

Xinhua, May 2, 2016 Adjust font size:

Chinese police have spotted and handled 583 cases of drunk driving and 4,735 cases of driving under the influence (DUI)during the three-day May Day holiday ending Monday, according to the Ministry of Public Security (MPS).

The MPS said, traffic cops have been on the lookout for DUI during the holiday, particularly around restaurants, suburban holiday resorts, among other places.

The number of traffic accidents and related deaths were down by 33 percent and 43 percent respectively during the three days as compared to the May Day holiday last year, the MPS said.

The ministry announced previously that police will run a one-month crackdown on drunk driving until May 31.

Checks will be especially intense during afternoons, nights, weekends, holidays and around big events like weddings and funerals.

China amended the Criminal Law to criminalize drunk driving in 2011. The revised law stipulates that any drunk driving constitutes a criminal offence, even if no road accidents or other serious consequences occur. Endit
