Zambia approves climate change blueprint

Xinhua, April 29, 2016 Adjust font size:

Zambia's cabinet has approved a draft national policy on climate change which will guide the southern African nation in dealing with climate change, a government spokesperson said on Friday.

Chief Government Spokesperson Chishimba Kambwili said the adoption of the plan will help the country in addressing matters of climate change seriously and in a coordinated manner.

"Zambia has continued to experience a number of climate-related hazards including drought and dry spells, seasonal and flash floods and extreme temperature. Some of these, especially drought and floods, have increased in frequency and intensity in the last two decades and have impacted negatively on food and water security, energy and general livelihood of the people," he said.

He added that it was important for the country to start addressing the challenges brought by climate change seriously and that the policy will ensure a multi-sectoral approach in tackling the problem. However, he did not elaborate what targets the blue print seeks to achieve. Endit
