Suspected attacker at Cape Verdean military barrack arrested: police

Xinhua, April 28, 2016 Adjust font size:

The suspect in the killing of 11 people at Monte Tchota military barrack in Cape Verde was arrested on Wednesday in Fazenda suburb of the capital Praia, national police have said.

The suspect responsible for killing of eight soldiers and three civilians, including two Spanish nationals, was identified as Manuel Antonio Silva Ribeiro, 22, who has been a soldier for the last one year.

According to Internal Administration Minister Paula Rocha, the soldier who had been placed under watch, had disappeared and there were strong indications that he could have been involved in the tragedy over personal reasons.

The bodies of the eleven people who were killed were found on Tuesday morning, but, according to Rocha, the deceased could have been killed on Monday morning.

Questioned why it took 24 hours after the attack for the incident to be reported to authorities, Rocha acknowledged that it was not "normal" for a military barrack not to contact the command center for such a long time.

In a Facebook message, Cape Verde President Jorge Carlos Fonseca deplored the death of the 11 people and expressed his sympathy and solidarity with the families. Enditem
