Nigerien government has extended the state of emergency in the Far East region of Diffa by three months starting April 28, due to the prevailing security situation that has been caused by continued attacks from Boko Haram terrorist group, an official source said Thursday.
The source said the new extension of the state of emergency in Diffa was considered necessary given the high level of threat of Boko Haram attacks.
The state of emergency was first declared in Diffa region on Feb. 10, 2015, and since then, the Parliament adopted a law authorizing its extension if need arises, in accordance with Niger's Constitution.
During the state of emergency period, Niger's interior minister and the governor of Diffa region are authorized to order any search in a home "whether day or night."
Nigerien government has argued that in order to win the war on terror, the security forces must be given "administrative, legal and logistical means to eradicate Boko Haram."
Since February 2015, Nigerien regions of Bosso and Diffa which border Nigeria, have come under numerous Boko Haram attacks that have left hundreds of Nigerien civilians and soldiers dead. Endit
