Portugal receives first shipment of natural gas from U.S.

Xinhua, April 28, 2016 Adjust font size:

Portugal's Galp Energia has received the first shipment of natural gas for the European Union from the United States, local media reported on Wednesday.

The Portuguese firm received the first ship designated for Europe in Sines, around 160 km south of the capital Lisbon on Tuesday night, a move which is expected to challenge Russia's domination of the European gas market and lower prices for consumers. The tanker Creole Spirit left Sabine Pass on April 15.

Houston-based Cheniere, the first company to get permission to export LNG, has also signed deals with Britain's BG group and Spain's Natural gas among a number of European gas companies.

The first shipments by Cheniere went to Brazil before cargoes went to Asia.

According to Deutsch Bank, in around 10 years, the United States could become Europe's main natural gas supplier. Enditem
