Nairobi bourse's key index falls below 4,000 mark

The Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) 20 Share Index shed 28 points on Wednesday to stand at 3,985.04 as it crossed below the benchmark 4,000 mark on another low trading day.

The drop was a continuation from Tuesday, where the index lost 7 points after peaking to 4,019 on Monday.

The All Share Index (NASI) and the NSE 25 Share Index too went down, with NASI ending 0.57 points lower to stand at 145.12 while the latter losing 12 points to settle at 3985.04.

Some 16 million shares valued at 3 million U.S. dollars were traded, down from 22 million shares valued at 6.7 million Tuesday.

Kenya's leading telecom Safaricom remained the top mover, trading 8.1 million shares and closing the day at a low of 0.16 dollars, down from 0.17 dollars.

The banking sector moved a total of 1.2 million shares, the worst performance in recent times. Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) Group, under the category, was the most traded counter with a paltry 539,000 shares that changed hands at between 0.39 dollars and 0.42 dollars.

The commercial and services sector moved 1.7 million shares, which accounted for 11 percent of the day's traded volume, with Longhorn Publishers trading 839,000 shares while Kenya Airways, which is facing a pilot's strike, moving 699,000 shares at a low of 0.04 dollars. Enditem
