New budget airline for Cape Town-Windhoek route

Namibia and South Africa have approved a new airline, the Fly Blue Crane, to ply the Cape Town-Windhoek route.

Fly Blue Crane was established in September 2015 and it operates from OR Tambo International Airport in South Africa.

Maiden flights will be conducted on May 13 and 15 before flight schedules are issued, according to a company statement released on Tuesday,.

Fly Blue Crane chief commercial officer Theunis Potgieter said they received the approval from Namibia and South Africa.

Potgieter said they were delighted to get the green light to service the Cape Town-Windhoek route and complement services offered by existing players in the market.

He also said it is the right time to launch the flight along this route in the light of the growing tourism and business ties between South Africa and Namibia.

Currently, Fly Blue Crane offers cargo services on all its flights to Kimberley and Bloemfontein, as well as between Kimberley and Cape Town, and between Bloemfontein and Cape Town.

The announcement comes a few months after another low-cost budget airline, FlyAfrica, was barred from plying the Windhoek-Johannesburg route after Air Namibia approached the courts demanding that the airline should be stopped. Enditem
