Number of Cambodian garment workers injured in truck crash rises to 70

The number of garment workers, who were injured in a truck crash on Wednesday in the southwestern Kampong Speu province, has risen to 70, according to the Cambodian Ministry of Labor.

"By noon, 67 victims are still in hospitals, as three workers have recovered and returned home," the ministry said in a statement.

Khim Samon, police chief of Oudong district where the accident occurred, said the truck was carrying a total of 75 female-workers to their factories in nearby Kampong Chhnang province.

"The truck overturned and spilled workers onto the street after one of its rear tire exploded," he told Xinhua soon after the accident, adding that the driver was detained for questioning.

According to Khim Samon, about 16 of the injured workers were in critical condition.

Transporting factory workers in open trucks to and from factories is common in this Southeast Asian country. Last month, a driver was killed and 27 garment workers injured when their truck hit a lorry in the southwestern Preah Sihanouk province. Enditem
