Two candidates compete for by-election for Singapore's Bukit Batok SMC

Xinhua, April 27, 2016 Adjust font size:

Singapore's ruling People's Action Party (PAP)'s K Muralidharan Pillai and Singapore Democratic Party (SDP)'s Chee Soon Juan were declared candidates on the nomination day for the Bukit Batok Single Member Constituency (SMC) by-election on Wednesday.

The by-election was held after David Ong, former Member of Parliament for Bukit Batok, resigned due to "personal indiscretions" on March 12. Local media reported that Ong quit over an extramarital affair with a married woman.

Muralidharan, 48, was part of the PAP team that nearly wrested Aljunied Group Representation Constituency (GRC) back at the General Election last year, while Chee is the chief of the SDP.

The official by-election will be held on May 7. Enditem
