Iran's defense chief heads to Russia for security conference: TV

Iranian Defense Minister Hossein Dehqan departed for Russia on Tuesday to attend the 2016 Moscow Conference on International Security, Press TV reported.

Dehqan's visit is to seek stronger military cooperation between the Islamic republic and Russia. The visit is taking place at the invitation of Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu.

The 2016 MCIS conference, the event's fifth edition, will be held on Wednesday and Thursday and will focus on fighting terrorism, security issues concerning the Asia-Pacific region, as well as international stability and military cooperation.

As many as 500 officials and personalities, including 17 defense ministers, 14 deputy defense ministers, chiefs of staff, and experts, will attend the event.

Iran and Russia have close military cooperation over the past years. According to the reports, Russia has recently started to provide Iran with the S-300 air defense system. Endit
