Serbian kidnapped at Libyan oil field

Xinhua, April 26, 2016 Adjust font size:

Serbian's Foreign Ministry said that a Serbian national had been kidnapped while working at an oil field in Libya, local daily Vecernje Novosti reported on Tuesday.

Miroslav Tomic, 36, was kidnapped last Saturday on a visit to the Messla Oil Field, which is some 1,200 km from the Libyan capital Tripoli.

Serbia's Foreign Ministry said it is in contact with Libyan authorities and working to rescue the kidnapped man.

It said that the oil field is not in any conflict zone and that the kidnappers were most probably criminal groups in pursuit of ransom.

Tomic was employed by a German company to maintain oil pipes and facilities. He had lived in Libya for the past 20 years.

This is the second case of Serbian nationals being kidnapped in Libya. Two Serbian embassy employees in Tripoli, Sladjana Stankovic and Jovica Stepic, were kidnapped last November for ransom. They were killed in a U.S. air strike in February while negotiations were going on. Endi
