Brazil sees biggest March unemployment growth in 25 years

Xinhua, April 23, 2016 Adjust font size:

Brazil saw a total loss of 118,776 formal jobs in March, the largest monthly fall in 25 years for the same month, according to statistics released by the Ministry of Labor on Friday.

Almost all sectors of the economy registered job losses, except for public administration, which had 4,300 new hires, according to the statistics.

The commerce sector suffered the most, losing 41,978 jobs, while industry shed 24,856 people and the construction sector fired 24,184 people.

This brought the total number of job losses in Brazil for the first quarter to 319,150, the worst start to a year since 2002.

From March 2015 to March 2016, the country has lost at least 1.85 million jobs as the economic recession continues to bite.

According to the data, the country now has 39.3 million people in formal employment, as opposed to 41.2 million people in March 2015.

In 2015, the country's economy contracted by 3.8 percent and is expected to plummet again by 3.5-4 percent in 2016. Enditem.
