Chad's re-elected president urges supporters to obey law during celebrations

Xinhua, April 22, 2016 Adjust font size:

Chad's newly re-elected President Idriss Deby Itno on Friday asked his supporters to obey the law as they were celebrating his victory.

Itno, who has been in power since 1990, won the April 10 elections in the first round on 61.56 percent of the vote, according to provisional results released on Thursday night.

"Enjoy the victory while obeying the law. Do not stay on the streets," Itno said while addressing thousands of his supporters at the Place of the Nation.

In his first address since being re-elected, Deby Itno thanked his supporters and the parties that endorsed him in the election.

"Wait for final results which will be announced within the constitutional time line by the Constitutional Council. On that day, we shall have much to say and dance throughout the night," Itano said.

The Constitutional Council will declare the final results by May 8. Endit
