UNAMID urges conflicting parties in Sudan's East Darfur for restraint

Xinhua, April 21, 2016 Adjust font size:

United Nations-African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) on Wednesday urged the conflicting parties in Sudan's East Darfur State to exercise restraint following the recent tribal violence in the state.

"UNAMID is deeply concerned over the recent outbreak of violence in East Darfur which culminated in an attack on the residence of the Governor Wali in El Daein on Tuesday," the mission said in a press release Wednesday.

It noted UNAMID calls on all parties involved to carry out the utmost restraint and refrain from acts that could further aggravate the situation.

The mission further reiterated readiness to assist civilians in need of protection and support the state authorities in their efforts to bring down tensions.

On Monday, an armed tribal group stormed the house of East Darfur State Governor, burned it to the ground and killed three guards.

The incident came just one day after the killing of 12 people in the violent clashes between Rizeigat and Ma'liya Arab tribes in East Darfur.

Their conflict dates back to 1966 when the two confronted pasture land dispute. Endit
