Cameroonian soldiers killed by suspected Boko Haram militants

Xinhua, April 20, 2016 Adjust font size:

Three Cameroonian army personnel, including one officer, were killed and three others injured on Monday night in the country's Far-North region by suspected Boko Haram militants.

Army sources told Xinhua on Wednesday morning that the three personnel from Rapid Intervention Battalion, a special unit of Cameroon's army, were ambushed when they were on a monitoring mission in Dabanga bordering Nigeria.

The sources blamed Nigeria-based Islamist group Boko Haram for the attack.

Having killed over 10,000 people mostly in northeastern Nigeria, Boko Haram has spread its activities to neighbouring Cameroon, Chad and Niger.

Camroon's Far-North region has previously suffered suicide blasts blamed on Boko Haram.

The Cameroonian army launched its operations against Boko Haram in May, 2014.

Last year, the five countries around Lake Chad -- Nigeria, Cameroon, Chad, Benin and Niger -- formed a joint force to fight against Boko Haram.

Military operations have in the past year retaken large areas once controlled by Boko Haram in northeastern Nigeria. Endit
