China congratulates Raul Castro on re-election

China on Wednesday congratulated Raul Castro on his re-election as first secretary of the Central Committee of Communist Party of Cuba (PCC).

"President Raul Castro is a leader who is admired deeply by the Cuban people and has the respect of the Chinese people," said Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying at a daily press briefing.

"We warmly congratulate him on his re-election. We believe that Cuba will continue to make new and greater achievements in its cause of socialist construction under the leadership of President Raul Castro," she said.

Raul Castro was re-elected on Tuesday at the the final plenary session of the PCC's seventh Congress, Cuba's official state news agency Prensa Latina reported.

He had served as the first secretary of the PCC since the last Congress held in 2011, when he replaced his elder brother Fidel Castro. Endi
