Algeria counts 40.4 mln inhabitants

Xinhua, April 20, 2016 Adjust font size:

Algerian Statistics Office (ONS) on Tuesday said the new demographic balance in Algeria as since the start of the year hits 40.4 million against 39.963 million in January, 2015.

In its latest report, the ONS noted that 2015 was marked by an increase in births which exceeded, for the second consecutive year, the threshold of one million.

Last year was also marked by a rise in the number of deaths and a significant decline in contracted marriages, compared to recent years, the report read. The figures show that 2015 saw 1.04 million new births, 183,000 deaths, and 369,000 marriages.

Under the assumption that the growth rate in 2015 is maintained during the current year, the total resident population is expected to reach the threshold of 41.2 million inhabitants the next year, the ONS predicts. Endit
