Fidel Castro attends closing ceremony of Cuba's Communist Party Congress

Xinhua, April 20, 2016 Adjust font size:

Cuban revolutionary leader Fidel Castro on Tuesday appeared at the Seventh Congress of Cuba's Communist Party.

Cuban state media said that Castro entered Havana's Convention Center accompanied by the party's first secretary and his younger brother, Raul Castro, where he was received with a standing ovation.

Economic and political reforms for the next five years were discussed during the congress.

The last day of the congress coincides with the 55th anniversary of Cuba's victory over a United States-backed mercenary brigade that attacked the Bay of Pigs in an attempt to topple the Cuban government.

The Cuban Communist Party congress is expected to announce in its closing ceremony on Tuesday the results of the voting for the 114-member Central Committee, which in turn selects the 15-member Politburo and the first and second secretaries of the party. Endi
