Rwandan court upholds remand for genocide suspect extradited from DR Congo

Xinhua, April 19, 2016 Adjust font size:

High court in Kigali Monday denied bail to Rwandan genocide suspect who was extradited from DR Congo, Ladislas Ntaganzwa.

By denying Ntaganzwa bail, court upheld a lower court decision to remand the suspect for 30 days until prosecution concludes its investigations.

Court said the suspect gave no strong ground for asking for bail.

The 54-year old who was extradited in March had appealed against the lower court decision on grounds that it lacked competence to try high level crimes like genocide.

After thorough scrutiny of the bail application court has found reasons of appeal untenable- hereby deny bail and uphold earlier decision, presiding judge said.

The judge insisted that the lower court had the necessary competence to try the suspect's case.

Ntaganzwa is accused of genocide, public incitement to commit genocide, extermination, murder and rape in his former Nyakizu commune, southern Rwanda, where he was mayor.

He was one of the nine high-profile genocide suspects indicted by the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) with 5 million U.S dollars reward on his head. Endit
