Jordan cancels plan to install surveillance cameras at Al Aqsa Mosque

Jordan on Monday said it will cancel its plan to install surveillance cameras at the yards of Al Aqsa Mosque, the state-run Petra news agency reported.

Jordan's Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour said Jordan will continue to exert its utmost efforts to defend Al Aqsa Mosque and the holy sites in Jerusalem.

The premier added that Jordan planned to install cameras at the yards of Al Aqsa Mosque to monitor Israeli violations and raids into the yards of the mosque.

"The idea of installing the cameras was to document all Israeli violations," said the premier, adding that Israel tried to put obstacles against the implementation of the project.

"We were surprised by the opinions of some of the Palestinians who cast doubt about the objectives of the project, therefore, we decided to stop the project," said Ensour.

Jordan oversees the holy Islamic and Christian sites in east Jerusalem, which the Palestinians envisage as the capital of their future state. Endit
