Singaporean leaders send condolences over Kumamoto quake in Japan

Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Minister for Foreign Affairs Vivian Balakrishnan have written to their Japanese counterparts to offer condolences over the earthquake in Kumamoto Prefecture in southwest Japan, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) in a statement on Sunday.

MFA said PM Lee wrote to Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on April 15. PM Lee said he is "deeply saddened to learn of the loss of lives and widespread damage caused by the earthquake that struck Kumamoto."

PM Lee also offered the deepest condolences to the people of Japan on behalf of the government and people of Singapore.

Minister for Foreign Affairs Vivian Balakrishnan also wrote to his Japanese counterpart Fumio Kishida on April 15. Vivian said he would like to extend his heartfelt sympathy and condolences to the families affected by the disaster.

A second earthquake struck the region on April 16, sparking a new wave of destruction and a string of aftershocks. The number of fatalities stood at 41 according to the latest figures on Sunday morning, and thousands of people have been injured. Endit
