South Korea upset China for two golds at Asian fencing Championships

Xinhua, April 16, 2016 Adjust font size:

Host China encountered a huge disappointment by losing two gold medals to South Korea in the Asian fencing Championships here on Saturday.

South Koreans defended their throne as they beat world No. 2 China 40-33 in the women's epee team final. China, who won the women's epee team gold in 2015 World Championships, led by 8-6 after three rounds before South Korea won the next three to take a 18-14 lead and never looked back.

"We lost our pace in the match, and they restricted our offense very well. We have to make sure that we won't make same mistakes in Olympic Games," said China's Sun Yujie.

Led by Olympic gold medallist Lei Sheng, Chinese men's foil team failed to defend their title against South Korea.

China suffered a struggling start and trailed by 9 points. Chen Haiwei cut the deficit to 21-25 in the fifth round, but Shi Jialuo, who substituted Lei Sheng to play the seventh round, lost to Son Youngki 8-2, allowing South Korea to extend the lead to 9 points again.

Although Ma Jianfei scored six straight points to pull China within 36-39 after eight rounds, Heo Jun beat Chen in the decisive ninth round and took South Korea to a 45-38 win. Endit
