Unknown gunmen shot dead two aid workers in South Sudan, affecting humanitarian operations in the world's youngest nation, the relief agency said on Wednesday.
The South Sudanese were part of the Danish Demining Group (DDG)'s mine and bomb clearing division operating in the southern Yei region. They were killed in the southern Yei region as they were travelling to their work location. DDG began working in Southern Sudan in 2006 in the area of Humanitarian Mine Action and in 2009, in the field of Armed Violence Reduction. (S.Sudan-Killing-Mine)

HELSINKI -- Two people died and seven others were injured as a result of a four-vehicle pileup in Leppavirta, eastern Finland, on Wednesday afternoon, local media reported.
The accident occurred when one of the cars suddenly drove onto the opposite lane and collided with an oncoming car. The other two cars crashed head on, when they tried to stay away from the first collision. (Finland-Traffic Accident-Killing)

DAMASCUS -- Over 100 rebels have been killed over the past 24 hours in the northern province of Aleppo, pan-Arab al-Mayadeen TV reported on Wednesday.
The rebels were killed during battles with the Syrian government forces in the southern countryside of Aleppo. Battles have recently raged in southern Aleppo, as the al-Qaida-linked Nusra Front attempted twice to attack government-controlled areas in Aleppo. The Syrian government deemed the attacks, which occurred last week, as a violation to the currently holding truce in some parts of the country. (Syria-Rebels-Killing)

WASHINGTON -- The U.S.-led military operation against the Islamic State (IS) extremist group in Iraq and Syria has entered the second phase with the aim to dismantle the group, the Pentagon said Wednesday.
Colonel Steve Warren, the spokesman for the U.S.-led coalition fighting the IS, claimed that the IS has been weakened and thus lost ability to take hold of any key terrain for almost a year now.
