Nigeria says ready to honor prison transfer deals with other nations

Xinhua, April 13, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Nigerian government on Wednesday said it was ready to honor all the Prison Transfer Agreements it signed with other countries.

Minister of Interior, Abdulrahman Dambazzau, told reporters in the capital Abuja the government has made arrangement to soon receive Nigerians serving jail terms in other countries across the world.

Issues involving rights of the prisoners had been taken into consideration before the government inked the agreements, he said.

He mentioned James Ibori, a former governor of the oil-rich Delta state, who is currently serving a jail term in the UK, as one of the high-profile Nigerians set to be received by Nigerian authorities.

More than 15,000 Nigerians are serving jail terms in prisons abroad, according to local officials. Endit
