Great majority of Albanians want judicial reform: survey

Xinhua, April 12, 2016 Adjust font size:

A great majority of Albanians support the country's judicial reform draft bill, according to a survey conducted by the Institute for Development Research and Alternatives, Albanian Daily News reported on Tuesday.

According to the survey, 91 percent of Albanians are in favor of judicial reform, and one in five of them claim they are informed in detail about the changes proposed in the draft of judicial reform.

Those most informed about the reform want changes in institutions such as the General Prosecutor's Office. Seventy-two percent of those asked want changes made to the constitution. Meanwhile, 66 percent would like to see changes in the High Council of Justice and 65 percent want changes in the High Court as well.

According to the survey, 65 percent of Albanians are very optimistic about judicial reform being completed within the year. However, 66 percent of them think there are groups which want to hinder it.

A total of 52 percent think the reform will be a result of political negotiations which would have a negative impact on its success, for example, in the event of corruption. As such, changing the system would not guarantee its improvement. Endit
