5 Afghan police killed in insider attack

Xinhua, April 12, 2016 Adjust font size:

Some five police personnel were killed in a suspected insider attack in Afghanistan's southern province of Kandahar overnight, an official said on Tuesday.

"Five border police members died after one of their comrades turned his weapon at a security checkpoint in Spinboldak district Monday night," a provincial official told Xinhua.

The policeman behind the shooting fled the scene shortly after the incident, the source said anonymously.

Zia Durrani, the provincial police spokesman, confirmed the incident.

"An investigation team has been sent to the checkpost which is located in Spinboldak district bordering Pakistan and more details would be made public after the probe," Durrani told Xinhua.

The province is notorious for poppy growing and militancy.

The Taliban militant group has claimed the responsibility for the incident.

More than two dozen policemen have been killed in the so-called insider attacks in Kandahar and neighboring provinces since the beginning of this year. Enditem
