Morocco expels 2 French activists for attempted "violation of public morality"

Xinhua, April 12, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Moroccan authorities on Monday arrested and expelled two French nationals for attempted "violation of public morality" in the central city of Beni Mellal.

The two activists of a feminist organization Femen stripped naked from the waist up in the court of Beni Mellal to protest the trial against a homosexual.

"These members of a foreign organization which advocates depravity, who entered Morocco on Sunday, were arrested by security services after their attempt to violate public morality before the first instance court of Beni Mellal," local authorities in Beni Mellal-Khenifra region said in a press release.

This decision is in line with the regulations related to the entry and stay of foreigners in the country, the same source added.

Homosexuality is criminalized under Article 489 of the Moroccan penal code and people are periodically jailed for it.

It is not the first time the feminist group manifest in Morocco to protest the law that penalizes the practice of homosexuality.

Last year, two activists of the organization were arrested and expelled for shooting a video kissing with the slogan "in gay we trust" painted on their bare chests at a historic site in the capital Rabat. Endit
