Host China ties Costa Rica 1-1 in women's soccer friendly with late penalty

Xinhua, April 11, 2016 Adjust font size:

Thanks to Wang Shuang's penalty in extra time, Chinese women's soccer team tied their Costa Rican counterparts at 1-1 in an international friendly here on Monday.

Wang hit the target two minutes into extra time, after Costa Rican player Trana converted a penalty early in the second half. Two Costa Rican players, including Trana, was fouled out after receiving their own second yellow card.

China fixed a berth for the Rio Olympic women's soccer tournament through Asian Zone qualifications in March. This was the second game of series friendlies between two sides, where China won 2-1 in Game 1 last Friday.

The hosts created many chances in the first half. Ma Xiaoxu saw her shot blocked by Costa Rican goalkeeper in the 22nd minute, before Wang Shanshan's another attempt cleared by the goalkeeper again in the 26th. Both sides recorded a clean sheet into the locker room.

Li Dongna's hand ball in the penalty zone handed Trana a chance to break the deadlock, and the latter made it in the 49th minute. In extra time, Wang Shuang tied the score with another penalty. Endit
