4 killed in car-truck collision in Ukraine

Xinhua, April 11, 2016 Adjust font size:

At least four people had been killed and four others injured after a passenger car collided with a container truck in Ukraine's central Cherkassy region, authorities said Monday.

The accident occurred on the Kanev-Chygyryn-Kremenchug highway at around 4:30 p.m. local time (1330 GMT) Sunday, when the eight-seater car lost control and rammed into the truck on the oncoming lane, the State Traffic Office said in a statement.

Following the collision, four passengers in the car were immediately killed, while the driver and three other passengers were sent to a local hospital with multiple traumatic injuries.

The driver of the truck was unhurt in the accident, which, according to preliminary investigations, was caused by the car driver's overspeeding.

According to statistics of Ukraine's National Police, an average of seven people have died every day in traffic accidents in Ukraine this year. Human errors are the main cause of the accidents.

To reduce the mortality rate in traffic accidents by about 20 percent, Ukrainian authorities are considering introducing obligatory use of seat belts by all vehicle passengers and reducing speed limits on the country's highways. Endi
