Backgrounder: Fire accidents in India in recent years

At least 110 people were killed and more than 350 others injured in a massive fire that broke out during a fireworks display at a temple in the southern Indian state of Kerala early Sunday morning.

The following are some major fire accidents in the country since 2010.

March 23, 2010 -- At least 24 persons were killed in a massive fire at the iconic Stephen Court building on Kolkata's Park Street. An electrical fault was suspected to have caused the fire. Several people clung to the ledges of the building before they were rescued.

Dec. 9, 2011 -- A massive fire swallowed a hospital building in the eastern Indian city of Kolkata. In what was described as the worst fire tragedy in any hospital in India, at least 89 persons were killed, most of whom were suffocated to death by poisonous thick smoke.

Sept. 5, 2012 -- At least 54 people were killed by a devastating fire that engulfed a fireworks factory in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, gutting 40 of its rooms where 300 people were inside and destroying the factory completely.

Feb. 27, 2013 -- At least 18 people were killed in a devastating fire which gutted an illegal paper and plastic market in the eastern Indian city of Kolkata.

Dec. 28, 2013 -- At least 23 people, including two children, were charred to death in a major fire that broke out on an air-conditioned coach of an express train in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.

June 27, 2014 -- At least 11 people were killed in a blast and a consequent fire at a pipeline of a state-owned gas company in southern India.

June 28, 2015 -- More than 90 cars were set on fire in the city of Pune in the western Indian state of Maharashtra, with no reports of casualties. Local media reported that a person was detained by the police in connection with the incident.

Jan. 1, 2016 -- A devastating fire in Indian-controlled Kashmir killed at least 10 laborers. The fire broke out inside residential barracks meant for laborers working on a construction site. Endi
