Thaci takes office as Kosovo leader

Xinhua, April 8, 2016 Adjust font size:

Hashim Thaci, leader of the Democratic Party, took office as the "president" of Kosovo on Friday.

In his inaugural speech, Thaci pledged to be the guardian of the constitution and thanked outgoing "president" Atifete Jahjaga for her excellent work during her mandate.

Regional dignitaries including presidents of Croatia and Albania Kolinda Grabar Kitarovica and Bujrar Nishani attended the inauguration ceremony.

The inaugural ceremony was organized under heavy police measures because of fierce rejections of Thaci's election by the opposition in recent months.

Thaci was elected "president" on Feb. 26 with 71 votes in favor in the 120-seated Kosovo Assembly. Kosovo is a southern province of Serbia, which unilaterally declared independence in 2008. Endit
