Spain's three-party meeting ends without agreement

Xinhua, April 8, 2016 Adjust font size:

The first three-party meeting between the Spanish Socialist Party (PSOE), center-right force Citizens and left wing Podemos ended without agreement, party representatives said Friday.

The meeting was billed as an attempt to end the political stalemate since the Dec. 20 general election to pave the way for a three-party coalition government.

However, PSOE spokesman Antonio Hernando said the meeting ended without agreement, adding the party would keep working for a pact.

Citizens spokesman Jose Manuel Villegas said "the prospect is that there will not be an agreement."

Podemos leader Pedro Sanchez attended the talks with a list of 20 proposals, none of which were accepted. Speaking to the press on Friday, he said he was "very disappointed at the outcome. They said no to everything."

Podemos said its members would decide if they wished to join the three-party coalition under the conditions put forward by the PSOE and Citizens, and that the results of this ballot would be known on April 18.

If no government is formed by May 2, the Spanish Congress will be dissolved and new elections will be held on June 26. Endit
