Austria introduces border control at new sites to stem migrant flow

Xinhua, April 8, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Austrian government is to extend its border management system to control the influx of migrants to a further four sites by June 1, the Austria Press Agency(APA) reported on Thursday, citing the Interior Ministry.

The system has already been in place at the Spielfeld site bordering Slovenia. It will be implemented in Nickelsdorf and Heiligenkreuz im Lafnitztal in the state of Burgenland, both of which borders Hungary, as well as at the Brenner in Tyrol and Thoerl-Maglern in Carinthia, which border Italy.

In total, 12 new border crossing sites will be reinforced to enhance border control capabilities, it was reported.

The ministry said the expanded controls will be implemented after changes to asylum laws come into force on June 1. The scale of the controls are to be adjusted according to the needs at each given site.

Whilst the plans for the extension of the border management systems are in place, the ministry said no construction work has yet begun.

Austria will add the numbers of personnel at the Burgenland and Brenner crossing sites in the coming days, according to the report. Enditem
