Croatia not to block Serbia's EU accession: official

Xinhua, April 8, 2016 Adjust font size:

Croatia won't block Serbia's accession to the European Union (EU) as it hopes to have good relations with its neighbors, Croatian first deputy prime minister Tomislav Karamarko said on Thursday.

Karamarko said Croatia expects the EU will expand its borders to include Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, but added that EU standards must be met before the two could become member states.

"Serbia must meet some of the standards imposed by the EU and which it should adopt through painstaking negotiations," he added.

Serbia started its first two chapters of EU accession negotiations last December and hopes to open two more chapters before the end of June. Serbia expects to fulfill entire negotiations by 2019.

According to the EU rules, open or closure chapters of accession negotiation must be agreed by all EU member countries. Croatia entered the EU on July 1,2013. Endit
