Myanmar FM Aung San Suu Kyi meets Canadian counterpart

Canadian Foreign Minister Stephane Dion met with his Myanmar counterpart Aung San Suu Kyi in Nay Pyi Taw Thursday, sources with the Canadian Embassy said Thursday.

At the meeting, the pair discussed ways in which Canada can work with Myanmar new government on national reconciliation, internal peace and improvement of living standards of the people.

Dion who arrived Yangon on Wednesday, had met with representatives of Myanmar civil society .

He also met with Thant Myint-U, a renowned historian and founder of the Yangon Heritage Trust on Thursday morning.

Dion will also meet with Myanmar President U Htin Kyaw during his three-day visit.

Canada opened its first embassy in Yangon in August 2014. Myanmar and Canada have been cooperating in such areas as trade, development and security since 2010.

Bilateral trade between the two countries reached 51.27 million U.S. dollars. Canada provided 2 million U.S. dollars in humanitarian aid to Myanmar's flood caused by Cyclone Komen in 2015. Endit
