Ghana electoral commission demands audited accounts of political parties

Xinhua, April 7, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Electoral Commission (EC) Wednesday asked registered political parties to furnish the commission with their audited accounts, a statement released here says.

The statement, signed by Deputy Chairman in-charge of operations, Amadu Sulley asked all registered political parties to ensure that the requested information was submitted to the electoral body by May 31, 2016.

The electoral body warned it will apply the relevant sanctions to political parties that failed to comply with the directive.

The directive by the country's electoral body is seen by many as an attempt to ensure the various registered political parties operate within the stipulated laws.

The West African country goes to the polls in November to elect a president and a 275-member legislative body.

The two front runners for the election are the governing National Democratic Congress and the New Patriotic Party which was in government from 2001 to 2008 under John Agyekum Kufuor. Endit
