Australia to expand sport development program in Asia

Xinhua, April 6, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Australian government on Wednesday announced plans to expand its sport development program in Asia.

The Asian Sports Partnerships (ASP) program will see Australian sporting organizations travel to countries in Asia and deliver innovative sports programs to produce development outcomes in the region.

Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said the ASP program would provide 4 million Australian dollars (3.02 million U.S. dollars) over 2015-17.

"The first tranche of 2 million Australian dollars (1.51 million U.S. dollars) will be awarded to 10 Australian national sporting organizations to implement programs promoting community health, social inclusion, and youth participation in eight countries," Bishop said.

"Activities supported through these grants focus on empowering women and girls, combating domestic violence and promoting the inclusion of people with disabilities."

The program is a component of the Australian Sports Diplomacy Strategy 2015-18, which was launched in June 2015.

China is one of the eight countries that will be involved with the program.

The government granted Tennis Australia 99,200 Australian dollars in 2015-16 for the 'Tennis Hot Shots in China' program', which focused on gender, health, disability, and wellbeing for urban children. Endit
