Cyprus, Russia sign agreement on combating organized crime

Xinhua, April 6, 2016 Adjust font size:

Cyprus and Russia signed an agreement on combating organized crime, the Cypriot government said on Tuesday.

An official statement issued in Nicosia said the agreement was signed in Moscow during a working visit by the Permanent Secretary of the Foreign Ministry Alexandros Zenon.

Cyprus is home to tens of thousands of Russians who established their business or residence in Cyprus since the early 1990s.

The agreement was an addition to several agreements on bilateral cooperation, including defense, signed when Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades visited Moscow a year ago.

The statement said that Zenon discussed with Russian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Alexei Meshkov international and regional issues, focusing on the situation in Syria and Ukraine and on combating of terrorism in the Middle East region.

It added that he briefed the Russian official on the UN-led negotiations Anastasiades is conducting with Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci in search of an agreement reunifying Cyprus. Endit
