Bratislava commemorates 71st anniversary of liberation in WWII

Respect for the soldiers who fell during the liberation of Bratislava and the whole of Slovakia is one of the basic pillars of national policies, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said Monday.

He made the remarks while speaking at the Slavin memorial in Bratislava on the occasion of the 71st anniversary of the capital's liberation in WWII on Monday.

"Irrespective of whether I'm part of the executive or legislature, I'll keep supporting this pillar. You'll always find me at these events honoring the memory of those who came here but weren't able to leave," declared Fico.

Fico noted that nearly 7,000 Red Army soldiers died when liberating Bratislava.

"I reaffirm that we'll show great interest in preserving all memorials attesting to these events. You'll find us everywhere," he pledged.

Fico said he has great respect for all those who were killed in WWII.

"They were mostly Red Army soldiers taking part in the liberation of Czechoslovakia," he added when referring to this part of Europe. Endit
