Iran ready to help settle Nagorno-Karabakh conflict: minister

Iran's defense minister said Monday that his country is ready to help settle crisis between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region, Tasnim news agency reported.

"The Islamic republic of Iran will spare no effort for the settlement of this crisis," Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan told his Azeri counterpart Zakir Hasanov in a telephone conversation on Monday.

The Iranian minister also urged restraint by Baku and Yerevan in the ongoing military clashes, saying that the disputes should be resolved peacefully.

Armenia and Azerbaijan have been locked in a bitter conflict over the mountainous region of Nagorno-Karabakh. Their conflict over the region first broke out in 1988, when the region claimed independence from Azerbaijan to join Armenia.

Peace talks have been held since 1994 when a ceasefire was reached, but minor clashes occasionally occurred in the past along the contact lines and across the volatile frontline. The clashes have escalated since last month. Endit
