Fernandez defends men's title, Jin Boyang writes history (updated)

Jin Boyang won the first individual world medal for a Chinese man at the world figure skating championships here on Friday.

Spaniard Javier Fernandez defended the title as he presented a flawless free skate to score 216.41 points and clinched the victory with a whopping 314.93 in total.

Jin, coming into the free skate in fifth, landed four quads to win bronze, earning 181.13 to claim a bronze on the total of 270.99.

The 18-year-old became the first man to land four quads at worlds as he rode on the energic wave of Dragon Racing to write himself into the history book.

"Jin presented such a difficult routine. He truly is a genius and the hope of Chinese men's figure skating," exclaimed former world pairs champion Tong Jian. He and partner Pang Qing were invited to commentate on the worlds by China's Central TV.

However, Jin could only match the very best of the world when he improves on choreography and interpretation which he just scored 76.14 in the free skate.

Sochi Olympic champion Yuzuru Hanyu, leading the field by more than 12 points into the long program, fell once and touched his hand down two other times in a performance but he still earned 184.61 points for a total 295.17.

He settled for the silver for the second straight time behind training partner Fernandez. Enditem
