A high-level conference on preventing violent extremism is to take place here on April 7 to 8, an initiative jointly organized by the Swiss Confederation and the United Nations (UN), the Swiss Foreign Ministry announced on Friday.

According to statement issued by the ministry, Swiss Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon will open the ministerial segment of the conference on April 8.

"The Geneva Conference marks an important milestone in highlighting and comprehending the multifaceted nature of the prevention of violent extremism as a contribution to the efforts in countering terrorism," the statement said.

Building on the UN plan of action to prevent violent extremism published in December 2015, the aim of the conference is to help bring together the positions and fields of operation of the various actors working for peace and security, development and human rights to collaborate, so as to address the drivers of violent extremism.

The global event is "an opportunity for states, international and regional organizations, and civil society to voice their opinions on preventing violent extremism," the statement noted. Endit
