Agricultural trade between Russia, Belarus drops 22 percent in 2015

Xinhua, April 1, 2016 Adjust font size:

Agricultural trade between Russia and Belarus dropped 22 percent to 5 billion U.S. dollars in 2015, Russian Agriculture Minister Alexander Tkachev said Thursday.

"Belarus remains an important partner of Russia in the field of agricultural trade even though the turnover between the two countries showed a negative trend in 2015," the minister told a joint meeting of the agriculture ministries of the two countries.

Despite the difficult economic situation, Russia exported agricultural products and foodstuff worth 17 billion dollars in 2015, which was five times more than a decade ago.

Currently, Russia can meet its own needs in a number of important products, including grain, oil and sugar.

Moreover, for the first time in years, Russia managed to exceed the threshold for the doctrine of food safety of meat in 2015. The share of domestic meat production has reached 87 percent of the market, Tkachev said. Endi
